June '25 Product Release: PEFCR 3.1 Now in Carbonfact

We're excited to announce that the final version of the Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules (PEFCR) for Apparel & Footwear is now fully integrated into Carbonfact. This significant update directly supports your compliance with EU sustainability standards and enhances how clearly and effectively you can analyze and communicate environmental data.

What's New?

Clearly Display All 16 PEF Indicators

Our platform now clearly presents the breakdown of a product's environmental impact across all 16 PEF categories, such as climate change, freshwater eutrophication, fossil resource use, and more. These visualizations are easily accessible on both product pages and in the Explorer view, allowing your team to identify and prioritize key impact areas at a glance.

Functional Unit Per Use

PEFCR introduced the concept of a functional unit per use, meaning environmental impacts are calculated based on the number of uses a consumer can expect from a product. We’re happy to say that Carbonfact now displays the functional units per use of your products directly within Carbonfact, reflecting the latest PEFCR methodology. We’re currently using PEF’s default assumptions – in the future, customers will be able to share their data to compute the formula above, and we'll adjust the calculation accordingly

Default Durability and Repairability Assumptions

Carbonfact now incorporates default assumptions for durability and repairability, aligned with the latest PEF guidelines. On your product pages, you'll see the Specific Duration of Service clearly displayed. This is calculated as:

Specific Duration of Service = Default Duration of Service × Intrinsic Durability Multiplier × Repairability Multiplier

We currently apply default assumptions with an Intrinsic Durability Multiplier of 0.67 and a Repairability Multiplier of 1. These defaults help you quickly understand how durability and repairability influence your product's environmental footprint calculation and identify areas to enhance your product sustainability.

Why It Matters

Accurate compliance with the latest PEFCR is increasingly critical for brands operating in the European market. These updates enable you to measure according to EU regulations and strategically identify opportunities for reducing environmental impacts far beyond CO2.
