Båstadgruppen is a Nordic B2B supplier of workwear, safety and occupational apparel and footwear.
For workwear and safety-footwear brands like Båstadgruppen, environmental data isn't just a reporting requirement. It's evidence that a product will perform under demanding conditions and hold up over years of use, the core of the durability promise these categories are built on.
At the same time, Båstadgruppen’s B2B customers increasingly expect standardized environmental data as part of tender processes. But standardizing product-level data is complex: products combine technical fabrics, trims, protective components, and multiple suppliers, while data is often scattered across different systems and formats.
That’s why Båstadgruppen partnered with Carbonfact – to turn fragmented data into credible product-level insights it can use for directing sustainability investments, tenders, and regulatory compliance.
Båstadgruppen serves industries like construction, manufacturing, healthcare, and outdoor work. Rather than operating as a single consumer-facing brand, it manages multiple brands and product categories, grown in part through acquiring smaller companies.
Product and supplier information was spread across PDFs, Excel files, and emails, in different formats across Båstadgruppen's brands and suppliers, some of it incomplete, outdated, or difficult to validate.
Båstadgruppen’s small sustainability and compliance team was also responsible for chemicals and regulatory topics. The company therefore needed a solution that would reduce manual work and be an extension of Båstadgruppen’s small team.
Several capabilities made Carbonfact the right fit:
Ability to work with imperfect data: Båstadgruppen could upload the product and supplier information it already had, even when data was incomplete or inconsistent. The platform automatically fills data gaps using smart rules built from running over 50 million apparel and footwear LCAs.
Granular Scope 3 measurement: Carbonfact uses more than 150,000 fashion- and region-specific emission factors to calculate emissions across materials, manufacturing processes, suppliers, and locations. This gives Båstadgruppen a detailed view of Scope 3, where most of its footprint lies. The platform also incorporates Scope 1 and 2 operational emissions into GHG Protocol-aligned company footprint calculations.
Standardization: Carbonfact helped establish one data-collection format across suppliers, articles, brands, and categories.
Hands-on expert support: Carbonfact’s data team cleaned initial BOM files, analyzed data gaps, and identified missing inputs. To support the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for Båstadgruppen’s 239 T-shirt, its science team developed bespoke emission factors for cotton spinning, knitting, bleaching, dyeing, finishing, and garment assembly.
Connected ecosystem: Carbonfact integrates with Retraced, Båstadgruppen’s supply-chain traceability platform, and is building a future connection with Delogue, its product lifecycle management platform. Connecting the systems helps its small team avoid duplicate work and build a more integrated data ecosystem.
The result? Product, BOM, and purchase-order data now feed directly into Carbonfact’s LCA calculations. Instead of manually searching through PDFs and emails, Båstadgruppen can see product-level impact breakdowns, identify hotspots, and prioritize further data collection.
Before working with Carbonfact, Båstadgruppen had not conducted product Life Cycle Assessments. Although free tools offered simplified calculations, the team wanted results that were credible.
Workwear makes Life Cycle Assessment particularly challenging. Footprinting must account for technical garments, PPE, safety footwear, and complex combinations of trims, specialty fibers, laminates, finishes, and numerous suppliers.
Through its work with brands including Snickers Workwear and Carhartt, Carbonfact understands these category-specific complexities. With Carbonfact, Båstadgruppen can:
Handle complexity at the SKU level: Calculate detailed footprints across colors, sizes, suppliers, and multi-component products.
Calculate LCAs at scale: Once data is processed, Carbonfact’s LCA engine automatically calculates product footprints across the full catalog, covering 16 environmental impact indicators.
Produce credible, auditable results: Carbonfact's methodology follows recognized LCA standards, and its engine and procedures are audited annually by PwC.
For Båstadgruppen, this enables a "measure once, report everywhere approach": the same product-level data can support customer requests, tender submissions, eco-design, EPDs, and future Digital Product Passport requirements.
EPDs are one example: an increasingly requested, verified, and registered document that communicates a product's quantified environmental impact over its full lifecycle. Carbonfact and Båstadgruppen developed an EPD package for one product, the 239 T-shirt, which has since entered independent verification.
